Yes We Can!

You’re probably wondering why on earth surfing champion and Planet Ark ambassador, Layne Beachley, is standing inside a recycling bin. Well, Planet Ark are currently running a competition to encourage us to recycle aluminum cans when we’re out and about at parks, beaches (get it – beaches?) and other public spaces. The humble tin can can be recycled an infinite number of times and, according to RMIT, recycling just six cans will offset your 25km train trip, 17km bus ride or 10km car ride! To enter simply take a picture of the recycling bin you use at home, school or work before the end of the month. There are plenty of prizes up for grabs, including an iPad 2. Good luck!

Dressing Marilyn

Ever since this gorgeous book landed in the Peppermint office we’ve been swooning over Marilyn’s impeccable vintage style. Authors Andrew Hansford and Karen Homer have put together an irresistible collection of sketches, dress patterns and behind-the-scenes snapshots of some of The Blonde Bombshell’s most famous get-ups. Who ever knew Hollywood starlets had such good taste? Thanks to Murdoch Books, we have one copy of Dressing Marilyn to give away to a lucky reader! For your chance to win, leave us a comment below and tell us who your favourite retro-style icon is. {Please note: to enter, you must have an Australian postal address}.

Spirited Style

That trusty fashion staple, the little black dress, is about to be transformed yet again by emerging Australian designers for next years ‘The Spirit of the Black Dress’ exhibition. The exhibition pays homage to the black frock and celebrates young designers, providing them the opportunity become part of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Applicants are assessed on their originality, silhouette and texture, and most importantly they must use sustainable thinking, production and materials! Ten winning designs will be chosen to feature at the festival. If you think you have what it takes, submissions are open until November 24.

The New Artisans

Imagine for a moment dropping all your responsibilities right now, walking outside into a sunny courtyard with a cup of green tea, some sort of muffin (I’m going to go with… blueberry?) and one of the most inspiring new books of the season. We’re talking about Olivier Dupon’s The New Artisans: a beautifully designed and divinely photographed celebration of the magic of handcrafting, profiling over 70 artisans who use craft techniques to create their own special brand of stylish whimsy… It’s our new bible. I want to live in its pages. And without the help of Can Do Books, a specialist Melbournian bookstore who have been supplying the best in craft, design, photography, gardening and DIY titles for over 20 years, we may not have even known about this book – and we certainly wouldn’t have THREE COPIES to give away to you lucky folk!

It’s going to be a fight to pry them from our grip, but if you’d like to win yourself a brand new copy (and trust us, you do) simply comment below and let us know what’s inspiring you the most at the moment. We know what our answer would be. (Hint: it’s this book). Entries close next Thursday, September 29 at 5pm – and while you’re waiting, make sure to check out Can Do Books’ website and Facebook page where you can find out about the store’s special craft programs and social meet ups. Who knows, your work might even end up in a book as lovely as this…
