"There’s a word that gets thrown around a bit when we’re talking about garments and fashion, and I’ve got Big Feelings about it. It’s a word often said with good intention and compliment at its core but I have to confess: it never fails to take the wind out of my sails when I hear it. That word, my friends, is ‘flattering’.

Those who know me know that I’m a proactive praiser – but I really don’t think telling someone that what they’re wearing is ‘flattering’ is a compliment at all. Why? I believe there’s a big, fat subtext to it. It’s a smoke-and-mirrors word disguising the truth of the praise – that truth being that the observer believes that whatever I’m wearing makes me look smaller/slimmer/more shapely/less shapely than I truly am. In essence, it’s telling me that I look something other than my true self and that’s really not what I’m about."

In Issue 63 Laura Jackson explores the well-intentioned compliment that comes with baggage, and asks the question: Isn’t it time for people to start dressing for themselves rather than society’s expectations?

"If there is something I know how to do well it is to keep living, learning, evolving and reinventing myself and my career so I can focus on living a heart- and value-led life of joy, peace, connection and prosperity and purpose."

We're very grateful to say that the incredible Sally Steele will be joining us to share her wisdom at PepTalks. In February 2022, the world changed irrevocably for Sally and her two teenage daughters, when Jason, her beloved husband of 28 years, died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm. Over the last 24 months Sally navigated her own grief, whilst supporting her kids through theirs, and shared her journey through social media outlets, becoming an unofficial grief mentor and igniting the development of a new book project and a TV series collaboration.

"By being intentional, heart-led and appreciative of what actually matters, you can live a joyful life full of purpose and passion if you choose."

It’s almost our favourite time again! Yup, we’re getting ready to immerse ourselves in the vibrant celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island art, fashion, and culture that is the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF), returning to Larrakia Country from August 7-10 this year.

This annual event is a cornerstone of Australia’s cultural calendar, offering a unique opportunity to engage with the rich tapestry of First Nations creativity. (Read: fall in love with the most beautiful, inspiring arts and crafts created by over 1,500 artists from over 70 Indigenous-owned Art Centres – and have the opportunity to ethically purchase an heirloom of your very own directly from its creator!)

So, what are we looking forward to most? Well, everything! But there are a few things you simply cannot miss out on – head to the link in bio to read more.

In the meantime, enjoy these snaps from our time at DAAF last year, as National NAIDOC Week comes to an end. NAIDOC Week marks a powerful milestone: 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. The 2025 theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of young leaders, the vision of communities, and the legacy of ancestors.

PepTalks! 🎉

We're so excited about our upcoming PepTalks – it's going to be a fabulous night of community, connection and creativity. And we couldn’t pull it off without the support of our event partner, @AustralianMakersDirectory, a free-to-join online directory that gives creatives a place to showcase their wares and connect with mindful shoppers.

Founded by Angela D’Alton and Renée Baker (@DaltonBakerProductions), these two well-known legends have deep roots in the maker community and understand the challenges and opportunities faced by artisans. Angela and Renée came together with a shared vision: to create an accessible and inclusive platform that celebrates and supports the incredible talent of Australian makers in business. The directory was created as part of a movement away from the inconsistencies of the algorithms of social media. It's about creatives banding together to make something different. You might have spotted them in the latest issue!

“Content creators are often prioritised over the creators of gorgeous, tangible things,” explains Renée. “The Australian Makers Directory offers a reliable and relevant place to be found. Makers can showcase their work in a space built just for them, designed to celebrate craftsmanship, foster connections, and attract the right kind of attention. Oh, and it’s free to join!”

Huge thanks to Angela and Renée for supporting PepTalks and helping bring the Peppermint community together IRL!

This matching set is FIRE Jessie! 🙌🏼

From @MadeByMeJessieB:

“The Acacia Aline skirt!
@PeppermintMagazine and @WeftAndWarpFabrics

Proudly sewn today by a mum who shirked all responsibility.

I made size H-
W:87cm, H110cm, height 168.5cm
I actually pulled the waist in by 1cm on each side- as I wanted my skirt to sit above my belly button, and that was all!

I went with a thrifted canvas upholstery fabric, thrifted zip and of course, because I had an hour to spare, and I didn’t want to do chores, I made a matching @Paper_Theory LB pullover!!

For the brisk weather my @Tightology tights from HeyJudeLovePete and my new thrifted $7 princess Polly slides

I had till 1430hrs to finish, and I skated it in! (Had to pick up the kids from school! )

The Finders Keepers Melbourne Design Market features almost 270 stalls and rolls around but twice a year. So, if you’re in the business of collecting mindful treasures and giving meaningful gifts, you’ll want to make the most of your day at the fair. Lucky for you, being the Type A bunch we are, we’ve already pulled together a game plan — including strategic snack stops.

So, details. The autumn/winter event runs from 11 to 13 July at the Royal Exhibition Building in the Carlton Gardens. General admission is $12, under-13s are free and, if you like to peruse in peace, there’s a low sensory hour from 9am on Sunday, 13 July. Outside that time, you can expect live music, bars and kid-friendly communal art. It truly is an extravaganza with a mind-blowing range of trinkets and food trucks, which is why we suggest you prep ahead. Let’s get ready together - head to our website (link in bio) to see our guide on how to plan your day!

PepTalks - Singalong! 🎶

If you came to the last PepTalks event, you'll know how much of a hit the singalong at the end was. Hillary (@hillwallart), the multi-talented founder of @CorkAndChroma, is back to round out the night with a tune... nothing beats a good community karaoke to dust off the cobwebs and feel some connection! Any requests?!

"For me, participatory art is a way to build community and participate in the everyday practice of democracy. By making art together and creating projects that invite audience participation, I believe artists can help dissolve that feeling of hopelessness and isolation that is a product of hyper-individualism (in ourselves and in others)."

Across Australia and the world, people who aren’t quite on board with the status quo are threading resistance into every stitch, weaving defiance into tapestries and knitting communities together in the fight for justice. Artist, researcher, and craftivist @TalFitzpatrick's vibrant textile creations blend appliqué, embroidery and activism to address pressing social issues.
