There’s one day left to grab this issue from the newsagents - the next issue is three months away and if these words from Ellie don’t inspire you to run and nab one, we don’t know what will.
“Why did I leave my copy unopened for 3 days? 🫣 …I doubted myself. Sometimes I get awkward and muddled in person. I worried about my (new!) dress not being perfect and my hair going wild and that my studio wasn’t “artsy” enough and that people will think I’m all fun and games and no brains and well…I had NOTHING to worry about. 😆 I never doubted @peppermintmagazine and @kelleysheenan or @_housefrau !
I doubted me.
All of my fears were a reflection of me feeling generally unsure about myself at the time of the interview…but I think I had the wrong idea about this. @kelleysheenan and @_housefrau (the incredible photographer and awesome person!) weren’t trying to capture *my idea of what the perfect artist is*, they were trying to capture me. As I am. Puppy at my feet. Tongue tripping over my ridiculous ideas about trends and how I find inspiration from just having bad eyesight / misunderstanding the world… it was and really is the greatest honour to be “seen”. And they made me feel it.
I also spoke about how I use my designs to try and create shared connection and joy… and I hope that all of you here feel that.
The biggest thanks to all of you. For being here. For humouring me and my Big Dreams ☺️💖

"I’m a Central Coast girl at heart – I grew up in the north, at Buff Point. After studying fine art at the University of Newcastle, I did a lot of travel and lived abroad, then I was in Sydney for 10 years until my partner and I started a family. We moved to Umina Beach on the Central Coast in 2017 and have adored creating a life wedged between the ocean, the Hawkesbury River and the abundant Brisbane Water National Park.
I started creating ethical garments in 2012 with a beautiful workshop in Lucknow, India. I was introduced to traditional handloom fabric because we were able to order 25 metres of it rather than hundreds of metres at a time – little did I know that it would become the heart and passion of the brand. I’m a maximalist at heart, so I love a good splash of colour – and ikat handloom is the perfect match."
We catch up with designer @Carlie_Ballard, whose eponymous label sells hand-woven, ethically produced clothing and bedding. She’s a long-time local with a soft spot for the Peninsula, the southernmost region of NSW’s Central Coast. Carlie and her family are currently living in Indonesia, so when we asked for her favourite Central Coast haunts, Carlie was more than happy to take a trip down memory lane (and the good news is, while she’s away, you can rent her gorgeous Umina Beach home!).

Looking to snag yourself a one-of-a-kind garment while contributing to a good cause? The @DangerousFemales Fundraising Runway has got you, boo.
This colourful, creative gathering took place over the weekend at @FelonsBarrelHall and we were there – celebrating some of Queensland’s most talented sewists while raising much-needed funds for Dangerous Females, a movement founded to combat violence against women by raising awareness and funds for support services in Australia. The registered charity sells fun tees with 100% of the profits going to @BeyondDV – an Australian organisation dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence.
Dangerous Females met us at the intersection of meaningful advocacy, women’s empowerment and celebration, as 13 outstanding designers were invited to create a garment of their own design, to be modelled at the event and later auctioned off. And we gotta tell ya, every designer and every model Understood 👏🏻 The 👏🏽 Assignment! What a show!
Even if you missed the event, the great news is that every one of the 13 stunning creations showcased on the runway is still up for grabs, with bidding ending on the night of 28th August 2024.
