Dangerous Females met us at the intersection of meaningful advocacy, women’s empowerment and celebration of some of Queensland’s most creative sewists with their Fundraising Runway event at Felons Barrel Hall in Brisbane last Saturday. Thirteen outstanding designers were invited to create a garment of their own design, to be modelled at the event and later auctioned off to raise much-needed funds for Dangerous Females, a movement founded to combat violence against women by raising awareness and funds for support services in Australia. The registered charity sells fun tees with 100% of the profits going to Beyond DV, an Australian organisation dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence. Thirteen garments were worn by 13 models for the runway – another amazing selection of creatives who strutted their fine selves across the stage and then down into the audience for us to bask in the glory of the garments and the effervescent personalities who wore them. I gotta tell ya, every designer and every model Understood. The. Assignment! What a show!

But I’ve gotten ahead of myself. Let me take you back a step and paint a picture of this event from the audience’s perspective. Upon arriving at Felons Barrel Hall I instantly knew I was with my people. You should have seen the sea of colour and smiles as we mingled out the front awaiting the moment we could head inside for the event. Friends were connecting, new friendships were being made and compliments were flying left, right and centre because the outfits were so on point! It was incredible to witness the juxtaposition of life and colour uniting to shine a much-needed light on the devastation of violence against women. Such a wretched topic was met with a community of people coming together in a dopamine-dressed demonstration to share this powerful message (the wise words of Helen Keller) – “Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much”. It felt really good to be a part of it.

Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.

Once we were inside the fun really kicked off! Tables laid with fruit, pastries and show-stopping sourdough with avo and pickled chilis (can recommend) awaited us as we made our way to our assigned seats “oohing” and “ahhing” at all the fabulous outfits in the crowd, tasty tipple in hand. There was Insta-idol spotting (omg, omg, omg) as so many of our Brisbane talented creative community showed up to support the Dangerous Females team. Live music by Ellen Reed and Ixara, giggle-inducing words from Patience Hodgson  and cameos from the Dangerous Females team themselves ensured there were no awkward silences, and the most intense anticipation for the raffle prizes being drawn was a whole lot for everyone’s nervous systems! I mean, come on, there were four tickets to Roxette up for grabs!
