Issue 63 Is Here To Bring Inspiration Through Care, Community And Connection

We rise by lifting others: this well-known quote from Robert Ingersoll is a saying we’ve used often here at Peppermint, since the early days. Surely the act of extending a hand to our friends and neighbours, known to us or not, is the true meaning of life? Ngarabul and Torres Strait Islander artist Lauren Rogers, who created the phenomenal cover for this issue, beautifully said, “Like the plants it honours, we thrive through care, community and connection. May this serve as a gentle reminder that in lifting each other, we all flourish.”

We’re very excited to be sharing Issue 63 with you all – this stunning issue is full of hope, empowerment, education, inspiration and creativity. All the good things we need in our life right now! We hope you love it as much as we do.

Learn about Culture and Country from our cover artist Lauren Rogers, the history of women wearing pants, and wildlife rescue from Dr Audrey Shen. We explore the art of protest with craftivists from around the world, look into the environmental impacts of AI and ponder whether we should drop the word ‘flattering’. We chat to The Social Outfit, the fashion social enterprise empowering migrants, and visit made590, the brand creating inclusive, locally-made clothing.

We discover Nagula Jarndu, a NFP Aboriginal women’s art centre in Broome, and Amanda Hayman from Magpie Goose questions why doing good costs so much. Read about some sustainable stays, businesses taking care of profits *and* planet and a sizeable stash of sewing stories and inspo!

And, let’s not forget the sewing pattern – say hey to the Acacia A-line Skirt! Created with help from the wonderful Weft and Warp Fabrics, this classic style is accessible to beginner and experienced sewists alike. Curved front pockets and the fun exposed-zip detail at the centre back make this style pop! It’s soon to become your next wardrobe staple and a pattern you can happily play on repeat. Made in collaboration with our friends at Weft and Warp, our version of the Acacia A-line Skirt pattern was sewn using the Tollerton 100% cotton 9oz denim. We added contrast top stitching using Gutermann Professional Jeans Thread in Dark Gold 1970 for that classic look. The printed sewing pattern comes free with the printed version of Issue 63, and a free digital copy is included when you buy the digital version of Issue 63 directly from us (exclusively). Hoorah!

May this issue bring you community and connection, and – above all – inspire you to choose to care. To get your copy, swing by our online shop or your closest stockist.

As the world careens towards AI seeping into our feeds, finds and even friend-zones, it's becoming increasingly hard to ignore.

We just wanted to say that here at Peppermint, we are choosing to not print or publish AI-generated art, photos, words, videos or content.

Merriam-Webster’s human editors chose 'slop' as the 2025 Word of the Year – they define it as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence.” The problem is, as AI increases in quality, it's becoming more and more difficult to ascertain what's real and what's not.

Let's be clear here, AI absolutely has its place in science, in climate modelling, in medical breakthroughs, in many places... but not in replacing the work of artists, writers and creatives.

Can we guarantee that everything we publish is AI-free? Honestly, not really. We know we are not using it to create content, but we are also relying on the artists, makers and contributors we work with, as well as our advertisers, to supply imagery, artwork or words created by humans. AI features are also creeping into programs and apps too, making it difficult to navigate. But we will do our best to avoid it and make a stand for the artists and creatives who have had their work stolen and used to train AI machines, and those who are now losing work as they are replaced by this energy-sapping, environment-destroying magic wand.

Could using it help our productivity and bottom line? Sure. And as a small business in a difficult landscape, that's a hard one to turn down. We know other publishers who use AI to write stories, create recipes, produce photo shoots... but this one is important to us.

'Touch grass' was also a Merriam-Webster Word of the Year. We'll happily stick with that as a theme, thanks very much. 🌿
