The ‘Time to Act’ Issue: Out now!

Issue 40

Our Summer Issue 40 is on sale today and it takes a look at some big ol’ subjects: climate change, the rise of veganism, innovation in fashion, and the lessons we can take from traditional villages when it comes to living better, longer lives – plus a side of feminist water ballet for good measure!

Issue 40 Peppermint The Village

We spoke to our coverstar Isabel Lucas about combining acting with activism, the dichotomy of living between Hollywood and Byron Bay, and her deep love and appreciation for nature – and how this drives her to use her voice to create real change. On the foodie front, we look into the recent rise in veganism, and talk to some plant-powered people who’ve created businesses in the areas of vegan food, fashion and fitness. And Lentil Purbrick from Grown & Gathered writes about lessons she observed from traditional Italian villages, including slowing down, eating well and the importance of being surrounded by community.

Elsewhere, we chat to Melbourne-based feminist water ballet squad The Clams about periods, sexual consent and their “clamazing” performances; and we delve into the rising trend of fast homewares and its parallels with fast fashion. In terms of climate change, we speak to Climate Council’s acting CEO Martin Rice to demystify the recent IPCC Report and find out what we can actually do as individuals to help stop the planet warming to catastrophic levels (without losing hope) – plus we hear from One Million Women’s Natalie Isaacs about how climate change will impact vulnerable women around the world, and what we can do about it.

When it comes to fashion, you’ll find a look into the recent innovations changing the industry for the better; a deep dive into sustainability with Byron Bay-based label Spell & the Gypsy Collective; hemp clothing inspired by the beauty of the Australian landscape from Adelaide’s Good Studios; and colourful shirts for tradies that aim to spark conversations around men’s mental health from social enterprise Trademutt – plus there’s plenty of lovely new eco labels currently on our radar!

Issue 40 Peppermint Spell

And that’s not all – you’ll also find a roundup of natural facial sunscreens, advice on how to raise radical children in a modern world, advice on minimising your plastic footprint at the supermarket, a free sewing pattern for the coolest DIY linen playsuit you’ll want to live in all summer long, plus plenty more feel-good stories that’ll put a smile on your dial and inspire you to get out there and make a difference. As the world careens towards AI seeping into our feeds, finds and even friend-zones, it's becoming increasingly hard to ignore.

We just wanted to say that here at Peppermint, we are choosing to not print or publish AI-generated art, photos, words, videos or content.

Merriam-Webster’s human editors chose 'slop' as the 2025 Word of the Year – they define it as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence.” The problem is, as AI increases in quality, it's becoming more and more difficult to ascertain what's real and what's not.

Let's be clear here, AI absolutely has its place in science, in climate modelling, in medical breakthroughs, in many places... but not in replacing the work of artists, writers and creatives.

Can we guarantee that everything we publish is AI-free? Honestly, not really. We know we are not using it to create content, but we are also relying on the artists, makers and contributors we work with, as well as our advertisers, to supply imagery, artwork or words created by humans. AI features are also creeping into programs and apps too, making it difficult to navigate. But we will do our best to avoid it and make a stand for the artists and creatives who have had their work stolen and used to train AI machines, and those who are now losing work as they are replaced by this energy-sapping, environment-destroying magic wand.

Could using it help our productivity and bottom line? Sure. And as a small business in a difficult landscape, that's a hard one to turn down. We know other publishers who use AI to write stories, create recipes, produce photo shoots... but this one is important to us.

'Touch grass' was also a Merriam-Webster Word of the Year. We'll happily stick with that as a theme, thanks very much. 🌿
