Emu Lands In NYC

Australian Indigenous fashion is gaining recognition on the global stage – and Natalie Cunningham, founder and designer of luxury swim and resort wear label Emu Designs, is making history this week as the first Australian Indigenous designer to be invited to showcase at the prestigious New York Fashion Week, running 10th to 17th September. Natalie is winging her way to the US to present her Spring/Summer 2016 line of flowing kaftans, flattering one-pieces and structured two-pieces featuring Indigenous prints, embellishments and the vibrant colours of the Australian landscape – alongside other up-and-coming Aussie labels such as Sabo Skirt and Tatiana Light. They’ll be featured as part of the annual Fashion Palette show taking place this Thursday night, which is dedicated to showcasing and celebrating Australian fashion on an international platform. This invitation builds on the strong success of Emu Designs, which has been steadily gaining industry attention since its launch in 2009; Natalie was named Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Fashion Designer of the Year in 2013 and her creations also featured on the Australian Indigenous Fashion Week runway in 2014. On being the first Indigenous designer to be a part of New York Fashion Week, Natalie says, “I am excited that I was chosen to showcase our Indigenous garments to the 36 countries that go to NYFW. Our Emu Designs prints are so unique to Australia as they are Dreamtime Stories. Australia has kept them to ourselves for so many years and it’s about time we shared our gorgeous Indigenous fashion with the world.” We couldn’t agree more!

Mending – and making – slows down fast fashion buying habits. Repairing used to be common practice, until disposable fashion took over. Extending the life of clothing by just nine months can reduce carbon, water, and waste footprints by 20–30%. Fixing doesn`t need to just be utilitarian – get creative with visible mending!

This incredible mini egg embroidered 3D artwork was created by @Emma_Giacalone_Textiles, a textile artist in Gloucestershire, UK.
"When we buy an item of clothing, a label is attached telling us how to look after it to keep it at its very best. My mission is to create little care instructions to help to remind us to lead our happiest life."
INGREDIENTS: Freehand machine embroidered onto 100% cotton, using Egyptian cotton thread, and wool felt backing.
