Knit for Those in Need

Melbourne Knits for Asylum Seekers

There’s been a bit of talk about asylum seekers lately in what we like to think of as this fair (in all senses of the word) country of ours. Unfortunately, very little of that talk has brought on the warm and fuzzies, but actions speak louder than words – which is why some keen and crafty people are banding together to stitch up warm fuzzies for asylum seekers in their communities. In Melbourne, you can whip up hats, gloves, scarves, jumpers and other winter gear for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to distribute by joining the Melbourne Knits for Asylum Seekers group, or do a quick internet search to bring up other groups that make and donate things to refugee organisations. Of course, if you can’t find a group near you, why not start your own? Contact the refugee organisation first to find out what they need most, and then gather some friends, wool, needles and cups of tea for a crafty, chatty and – ultimately – highly appreciated stitching session. If you’ve always wanted to learn to knit or crochet, what better motivation than this?
