One of the little joys when travelling backpacker-style is swapping books with other travellers – there’s always that shelf in the youth hostel or cheapie hotel with a lucky dip of pre-loved books just waiting to be discovered. But you don’t need hotel reservations to enjoy a book swap if you’re in Melbourne. Simply grab a book you love but no longer need and stroll in to Melbourne Central’s Little Library, where you can exchange it for another pre-treasured tome in between shopping and snacking. The latest blockbuster may not be here, but part of the fun of the Little Library is the sense of discovery – and the chance to strike up a conversation with a fellow swapper about their favourite characters and literary loves. You might even find a generous soul who’s brought in a copy of Peppermint: cue a beautiful new friendship!
