Beneath that flouncy skirt lies a supportive, twirl-friendly layer that won’t let you down when it’s time to bust a move.⁠

We created this beauty in collaboration with Jasmin Henzi of @Sewing.Masin, an independent Swiss designer beloved for her feminine creations (think: ruffles, ruching and Bridgerton vibes). While the Somerset is designed to be a mini-dress, the hemline is easily lengthened should your heart desire. And you’re really going to love this bit: there’s not one zip or button to contend with, making this a perfect pattern for adventurous beginners.⁠

Many thanks to our sewing partner @Spoonflower for helping to make our much-loved patterns possible! From fabric to wallpaper to home decor, Spoonflower is one of the largest marketplaces for designs by independent artists from around the world.⁠

As for fabric, you want a lightweight material for this one (she’s all about the drape) – silk or satin would be just lovely. We went with Spoonflower’s Organic Cotton Sateen and the dopamine design we used is Paint Splashes Big Navy by Project Runway alum and #WearHappyColor creator @KatieKortmanArt. Gorgeous, right?⁠

"There’s a wonderful openness that comes from sharing space with other creative women. Not everyone wanted to chat – some were quiet and still – and every part of the workshop was a delicate reminder that creativity takes many forms. At times the conversation was light and bright, other times it was deeply personal – a testament to the environment created when women come together and generously hold space for one another.⁠

All too soon our time was up. I stepped away with a full heart and a gorgeous little stitch sampler canvas, featuring sweet, colourful threads with happy patterns and a reminder of the value of attempting new things. Some stitches I mastered quickly, however one that I thought I knew turned out to be my least impressive effort. But you know what? That’s OK. No-one was there to criticise or belittle – in fact, it was the complete opposite. Hearing this eclectic group of women celebrate each other’s work truly made my heart swell. These were my people."⁠

“Sustainability has been trending for billions of years, or we wouldn’t be alive. It’s excess that is the trend, and we need to make it firmly out of fashion.”

Wise words from @orsoladecastro, the co-founder of @fash_rev (along with @carrysomers). This annual campaign – created in the wake of the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 – brings together the world’s largest fashion activism movement, and in celebration of the tenth anniversary as a global, people-powered movement, Fashion Revolution Week 2024 will mark a decade of activism with 10 days of action.

This year also marks the first global Mend In Public Day, on Saturday 20th April. The idea is simple: get out into your local community and stitch in protest against disposable fashion – repair your torn pockets and broken seams and spark conversations on making #LovedClothesLast.

So what can you do? From the Fash Rev team:

🌏️ Anyone can join the revolution. No two people look the same or lead a “perfect” lifestyle. We each have the power as global citizens to transform the ecosystem.

🌏️ There are different ways to take part in the revolution. Transforming the fashion industry isn’t an overnight task. It will take many people, approaches and perspectives to get there, including your own!

🌏️ The revolution is collaborative. The revolution does not work alone but in partnership with other social and environmental movements. We are all one; we are connected. Just as fashion is a feminist issue, it is a race and climate one too. Fashion is a part of the problem and we can all be part of the solution.

🌏️ The revolution needs everyone, everywhere. Fashion Revolution’s strength lies in our global community. International solidarity binds us on a shared mission to build a fashion industry that protects its workers and the environment.

"New shorts to match my recent gingham top make. I really love the result and will be making more of these!⁠

Thanks for all your brilliant suggestions for a shorts pattern, I based these off the #PeppermintSpringShorts #FreeSewingPattern and made the following changes: cut crotch curve at my size but extended everything else to size 16 for extra volume. Straightened hem (didn’t use supplied facings) and extended by 7cm to fold and use as scallop facing. To create the scallops, finish sewing shorts except for hem. Fold up extra length right sides facing. Baste and press. Measure leg width and divide equally, then draw and sew scallops. Trim excess to approx 4mm (make sure the corners are cut right to just before thread). Unbaste, turn out and press. I finished the hem inside using fusible tape, hopefully it lasts! Caper linen from @wearethefabricstore"⁠
