ME-MADE-MAY! 🪡

It's always a me-made month around here, but this challenge, created by Zoe Edwards @SozoBlog, brings us joy.

Here's some slides and words from Zoe to explain what it's all about (and what it isn't). We love the emphasis on falling back in love with what you already have. 🫶🏼

"Me-Made-May is the customisable challenge that helps YOU improve your relationship with YOUR handmade wardrobe. By wearing your existing self-made items more and/or in different ways than usual, you’ll learn lots of lessons about those items, your creativity AND how best to expand your handmade wardrobe going forwards.

My pledge for this year’s #MeMadeMay2024 challenge is the same as it has been for the last few years. However, its meaning for me has shifted and deepened somewhat in recent times. It’s probably because I’ve been making @checkyourthread podcast for over 2.5 years now and a lot of the lessons I’ve learned along the way are really sinking in.

Many people claim that they love clothes, and I am certainly one of them. I figured out that I love clothes more than many when I was about 17. My friends and I were discussing what we were going to wear on a night out, and I was still talking about our options AGES after they were clearly bored of the topic!

But in today’s rampantly consumerist society, it’s often forgotten that loving clothes should mean more than loving the acquisition (including making) of new ones. We should be investing energy, love and attention into the clothes WE ALREADY HAVE!!! We owe this to ourselves, the energy and resources that went into their production, the people that made them (and the fabrics/fibres that they’re made from), the planet that can’t handle the rate at which we’re discarding them, and the clothes themselves.

Often people discover during #MeMadeMay which #MeMades they don’t wear anymore. This is a super useful aspect of the challenge. But I’d like to offer up participants an additional challenge: see if you can fall back in love (or at least like) with some of them. It might require a bit of alteration or reworking to get there – I’m working on a podcast episode to offer help and ideas for that."
