Cold Feet? Here Are 10 Cosy Touches to Warm Your Winter Home

above IT’S PRETTY KNOTTED

When it comes to keeping warm as the winter winds blow, do as nature intended: skip the electric heater and make your home into your own cosy nest. Think softness when it comes to textures, materials and even the impact on the planet and you’ll be snuggly in no time. Here’s a roundup of a few of our favourite cosy and sustainable pieces to add to your winter cave.

Seljak Riverbed Blanket

The latest creation from the talented sisters behind Seljak Brand is the lush Riverbed Blanket. Knitted with merino wool, the rich colours and design are inspired by rivers running through agricultural regions. Its generous size and ribbed texture make it soft for snuggling, and because it’s made with natural fibres, it can actually be composted at the end of its life (with blankets currently being tested at beloved closed-loop farm Loop Growers).

Jade and May Colourful Cord Cushions

In a range of jewel box colours like Emerald, Mustard and Fuscia, these textured cord cushions from Geelong’s Jade and May pack a serious design punch. Hand-dyed and made in Bali, they’re just the thing you’ll need to help you build a luxurious bed fort.

It’s Pretty Knotted Chunky Knit Throw

When it comes to chunky blankets, we say go big or go home (so to speak). Putting her comically oversized knitting needles to work, Perth artisan and knitting devotee Wendy McClelland has larger-than-life, cosy and handcrafted home decor all stitched up with her label It’s Pretty Knotted. The chunky hand-knitted collection uses only superfine Australian merino wool, and you can choose to buy ready-made blankies or knit your own with one of her DIY kits or workshops.

Koala Bana Gugaa Cushion

Add the finishing touch to your burrow with this gorgeous collaboration between First Nations artist Niah McLeod and Koala. Printed with Niah’s distinctively delicate artworks, these comfortingly hefty cushions – each one weighs in at over a kilo – are made with a textured blend of linen and Certified Organic cotton with a recycled polyester insert for ultimate softness. For that final touch of softness, all profits from the collaboration go to ID. Know Yourself, an Aboriginal-led organisation supporting Aboriginal children living in the out-of-home care system.

Woolenstones Felted Stone Pouf

Creating stepping stones between art, nature and function, these handcrafted felt poufs are made from soft New Zealand sheep wool. Their Ukrainian makers, currently working from a temporary workshop in France, use merino, mulberry and silk to bring the stones’ realistic details to life.

Kip&Co Wanderer Velvet Petal Cushions

Velvet pillows? Who do you think you are, the queen? Absolutely you are, so enjoy these luscious beauties from female-founded, carbon-neutral Aussie brand Kip & Co. Ethically made in India using 100% cotton velvet, and filled with recycled materials, they’re just what you need to get started on your own pillow palace.

Flash Minky Rain Time Blanket

Flash Minky works with a range of upcoming and established artists to reflect the various artistic cultures and communities of Western Australia. These curators of cosiness collaborate with Indigenous artists and art centres to create bespoke soft furnishings – providing alternate income streams for working artists and allowing you to bring a touch of culture to your couch, bed or wall. Wrap yourself in one of their cosy, recycled cotton blankets and stay warm with the knowledge that 100% of net profits go back to the amazing artists!

Double Rugs Willow Cream Highland Rug

What good is a cosy room if your little feet have to hit a cold wooden (or, shudder, tiled!) floor? Solve the problem with one of these delightfully shaggy rugs from Double Rugs. This style, inspired by the shaggy hair of Highland cows and made using recycled materials, comes in a variety of colours and designs to suit any warm nest. Plus, in an Australian first, Double’s ingenious two-layer system makes them machine washable so the fluff will always be enough.

Koskela Meeting Places Bean Bag

Couch not cushy enough? Sink into a good seat with these beautiful bean bags from Koskela. The luxe covers are hand-stitched using natural materials including Belgian linen and organic cotton canvas, and feature stylish prints including these ones from the limited edition Dali Dyalgala First Nations Fabric range. Fill with plant-based, compostable beans from Envee and you’re ready to get down (on the floor).

Hommey Faux Fur Pet Bed

On chilly nights, don’t forget to keep your best bud warm too! These doggo beds from Hommey are ethically made in BSCI-audited factories and sent in biodegradable packaging. Made with removable covers for easy washing (absolutely essential if your pup loves a muddy puddle!), choose from seven colours and two sizes so your precious pooch will be peachy.

Between 2000 to 2015, global clothing production doubled... while the duration of garment use decreased by 36%.

We are throwing away clothing at a faster rate than ever before. How can we tackle this problem?

✨️ WEAR
Be an outfit repeater - wear your items of clothing as long as possible. Learn to style your garments in various ways. Loved clothing lasts.

✨️ SHARE
If you really need to move it along, share the love with friends - hold a clothing exchange night! Or organise a timeshare with a friend where you swap a few favourite pieces of fashion. If you really can't find a new home for it, then donate to an op shop or charity.

✨️ CARE
The care of your clothing – washing, drying and ironing – can account for approx 30% of a garment's total carbon footprint. Hand wash, line dry, wash in cold water, and only wash when necessary.

✨️ REPAIR
Mending – and making – slows down fast fashion buying habits. Repairing used to be common practice, until disposable fashion took over. Extending the life of clothing by just nine months can reduce carbon, water, and waste footprints by 20–30%. Fixing doesn't need to just be utilitarian – get creative with visible mending!

Have you whipped up the Acacia A-Line Skirt yet? 🪡

Accessible to beginner and experienced sewists alike, its classic style makes this skirt a wardrobe staple and a pattern you can happily play on repeat. Curved front pockets and the fun exposed-zip detail at the centre back make this style pop! The Acacia is a blank canvas, awaiting inspiration – add contrast top stitching, trim the pockets with bias binding or even change the length. We’ve chosen the smooth, clean lines that come from facing the waist, with back darts to ensure a neat fit on the hip. *chef’s kiss*

This pattern was made with the support of the lovely folk at @WeftAndWarpFabrics 🫶🏼 The team at Weft and Warp graciously sent three sewists the fabric of their choice to whip up their own Acacia A-Line – the results are super sweet!
