Whether we care to admit it, it’s often beautiful design – or perhaps an evocative description on the back of the label – that is most likely to guide our buying decisions at the bottle shop. But as the true environmental impact of winemaking is further quantified, there’s growing reason to take a closer look at the fine print and consider your wine’s environmental credentials.

In this series – created in partnership with our good friends at @YalumbaWine to celebrate the launch of their GEN collection of five ACO-certified, sustainably made wines – we’re doing a deep dive into some of the industry’s most pressing issues. In part one, we investigated the real meaning of ‘organic wine’. In the second of the series, we pose the question: Why is sustainability in winemaking so important? Read more at the link in our bio!

If there’s one thing better than curling up in your favourite nook with a page-turner of a book, it’d be gushing about your latest read with your closest friends. As JD Salinger’s protagonist says in The Catcher in the Rye, “What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much though."

With the idea of promoting good books, good reading and good conversations, we’ve started a #PeppermintBookClub – a space where each month we ask one of our favourite independent bookstores to curate a list of recommendations and tell us why they love them.

@WellRead__ is a curated book subscription and gifting service dedicated to delivering the very best new literary titles direct to your door. Co-founder @LauraBrading is a former bookseller and publishing professional who has set herself up in the enviable position of reading mountains of new releases in order to cherry-pick the most interesting and exciting books to share.

At the link in our bio, she shares her 10 picks for books to kickstart your reading in 2023.

We will be working today while turning our minds toward the hard work that must be done on these Stolen Lands for Makarrata. Take the opportunity to decolonise your social media feed, educate yourself and listen to the words of Indigenous writers and thinkers on the problems of 26 January and First Nations history.

The 26th of January is a day commemorating formal incursion into Aboriginal lands by colonist invaders, that for some reason (racism, political inertia and racism) is classified as a public holiday in Australia. Only a nationally recognised public holiday since 1994, Aboriginal people have been marching on 26 January since 1938. So whether you call it Invasion Day, Survival Day, Day of Mourning or 26 January, we know you know this is not a date to celebrate.

But what should you do instead? At the link in our bio, we've pulled together a bunch of resources to help you answer that question. There are many ways to effectively and respectfully show support for First Nations communities and call for change. How will you get up, stand up and show up this year?

@Generation_Women_Aus is a multigenerational storytelling night held in Sydney and Melbourne. Founded by Georgia Clark, who was moved by conversations with her mother about the feeling of disappearing as an older woman, the monthly event offers a warm and inclusive space where people of all ages can come together to share, celebrate and learn. The shows aim to amplify a selection of female and non-binary voices – representing those in their twenties through to their seventies – each sharing their own stories on a specific theme.

In response to the overturning of Roe versus Wade in America, the theme for November’s event was “Revolution”, with performers including Clementine Ford, Jane Caro AM and Virginia Haussegger AM. At the link in our bio, with thanks to the team at Generation Women, we’ve published the stories of six incredible women from the event. May they “reignite your ambition to think boldly and install hope”.

“We are acknowledging that food systems are a main driver of the climate emergency and that a shift towards plant-based diets can go a huge way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Plant-rich diets are also a ‘win-win-win’ for society: they have a lower environmental impact, significant health benefits and reduce animal welfare impacts.” – Greens Councillor, Steve Burgess

The City of Edinburgh Council has endorsed the @PlantBasedTreaty, becoming the first capital in Europe to join the initiative to tackle food-related emissions from animal agriculture and attributed deforestation – a key driver of the climate emergency. The proposed treaty is currently backed by 20 municipal governments worldwide.

Food and diet currently account for 23% of Edinburgh’s consumption-based footprint with 12% of these emissions from the consumption of meat. Climate campaigners are now calling on other towns and cities to follow Edinburgh’s lead and help create a council-led movement calling for a shift towards plant-based diets. Are you on board?
