WHAT A VIBE 💃🪡

Hi, Laura here! On Saturday I attended my first ever Frocktails event, hosted by the delightful team @BrisbaneSpoolettes and it didn’t disappoint! The outfits, the accessories, the smiles, the snacks and the “oh my goodness, can I touch your dress?” was enough to make my sewing-loving heart skip a stitch! It was an endless joy to see old friends, make new ones and I came away with inspiration in spades. Anyone else want to lock themselves away with their sewing machine for a week and turn out a new wardrobe? Yeah, same here, friend.

The sewing community of Brisbane (and some committed Melbourne stitchers, who flew in for the event) nailed the brief! I was so impressed and so proud of everyone’s work. What a talented bunch we are.

According to Oxfam, who coined Second Hand September back in 2019, producing just one cotton t-shirt requires 2,700 litres of water. There are many reasons to try and reduce our fashion footprint, from mass pollution of the production and transportation of clothes to a throwaway culture that leaves millions of clothes in landfill every year. And of course, precious resources like water are being used up.⁠

"Sewing swimwear is easier than knit clothing, honestly!⁠
⁠
Anyone who’s sewn with bamboo or rayon jersey will know the slinky terror. But swimwear fabric is stable and firm, it lies flat and doesn’t roll, and a whole outfit and no need for an overlocker or coverstitch. I’m converted.⁠
⁠
Top is #TidalBikiniTop by @SwimStylePatterns in a size 10. I used the binding method and removed the cup pocket and instead sandwiched the foam cups between front and lining, attaching them directly to the lining with a zig zag. This is just my pref so the cups can’t shift while swimming.⁠

The bottoms are #PeppermintBronteBathers in size 10. This a free pattern available with @PeppermintMagazine or pay what you can via their website. I had to modify the front as I only had the tiniest floral fabric left so I used a section for the front and then halved the waistband so it’s floral at the front and black at the back. There is also a bikini top I’ve made (in previous posts) and both designed by @SwimStylePatterns - can’t recommend the instructions and supporting graphics enough. They were so clear and helpful.⁠

Second Hand September!

When we buy something preloved, it’s not often we get to connect with the previous owner and share its new adventures. Not so with @ZachMander and Andre, and the ‘brotherhood of the travelling jacket’.

This Salvos gem spoke to Zach, who says “I liked it because it had elbow patches which make you look smart. They also help you go fast down slippery slides.”

Founder Tiffany Inglis opened The Good Op Shop after her partner poked fun at her op-shopping habit, suggesting she may as well open one herself. Now she's on a mission to change people's consumption habits. ⁠

“Buying is such a rewarding experience for people,” she says. “It’s something people love doing: it makes you feel good and you get a reward at the end of it. So, trying to change that is a massive challenge.”⁠
