Girl Rising

Girl Rising

“Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he’ll eat forever” says the famous proverb. While we wholeheartedly agree with this, we’d like to add that educating girls is a pretty good idea too. In fact, numerous studies have shown that ensuring girls in the developing world get a good education would significantly improve the issues of disease, poverty, population control and a host of other problems. But it’s always more interesting to hear from real people than read through research papers, which is why we’re excited about Girl Rising. The film features nine girls from nine countries – including Nepal, Sierra Leone and Haiti – who tell their own tales of how education has changed things for them, their families and their families to come.

Supported by World Vision and 10×10, the film is premiering in cinemas across the country on the International Day of The Girl Child, October 11th – complemented by a special The Global Women’s Project screening at Melbourne’s Cinema Nova. If you can’t get to a screening, you can host your own at home, or wait until the film comes to SBS television on October 28th! Nearly as exciting as the inspirational film is the fact that we have double passes to give away to two lucky readers – one to Cinema Nova, and one to your choice of cinema across the country. Please comment below with your preferred location and tell us how you’ll be celebrating the International Day of the Girl! {Comp closes 5pm, Wed Oct 9th}
