A few weeks ago, an Australian Indigenous Fashion Week was announced for 2013 as a way to help up-and-coming Australian Indigenous designers show their works on a world stage. One such designer already making waves is Lucy Simpson of Gaawaa Miyay. Lucy draws on her Yuwaalaraay heritage to tell stories through design, continuing age old traditions in new and innovative ways. Using all natural fibres and sustainable practices, Lucy’s strikingly beautiful works span across homewares, fashion and accessories. She has already been named as an outstanding designer to watch in Architecture and Design by Monument Magazine and was one of Australian Design Review’s top 10 picks at Design Made Trade 2011. Gaawaa Miyay represents a new generation of Australian Indigenous design, with Lucy set to become yet another homegrown hero. We look forward to seeing plenty more from this talent!
