Don’t miss our fourth PepTalks event at the fabulous Wandering Cooks in Brisbane on Tuesday 20 September. We’ll welcome John Elliott, the Australian Managing Director of life-changing brand TOMS; Kylie Johnson, the founder of ceramic studio Paper Boat Press; and Kelly Elkin, a sustainability trail-blazer who has forged a successful career as the cofounder of Clean Cut Fashion and Well Made Clothes, plus as a fashion designer with her own sleepwear label ALAS.
We hope you’ll join us!
John Elliott, TOMS Australia
TOMS was founded in 2006 by American traveller Blake Mycoskie following a trip to Argentina. After noting that the children in villages had no shoes to protect their feet, he turned to the traditional Argentine alpargata shoe as a simple solution. TOMS was born, complete with a pledge to give one pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased.
The company has since given out more than 60 million pairs of its trademark shoes. John Elliott, Managing Director of TOMS Australia, will share more about the history of this life-changing brand, its One for One business model and how TOMS now helps to provide eyewear, clean water and maternal health to communities around the world.
Kylie Johnson, Paper Boat Press
Brisbane local Kylie Johnson created Paper Boat Press while exploring her love of craft, ceramics and words in group and solo exhibitions. Twenty years on, her ceramics and books can be found in over 80 stores and gallery shops in Australia, New Zealand and the United States, including Anthropologie.
Kylie’s Ashgrove shop front, gallery space and studio are home to the making and display of ceramic ornaments, jewellery, illustrations and functional ceramic vessels. The gorgeous space is also where Kylie and her team curate exhibitions to share the work of their favourite ceramicists. A true people person, Kylie will open the door to her joyous business and share more about the loyal and loving community she has created.
Kelly Elkin, ALAS, Clean Cut, Well Made Clothes
A passionate advocate for sustainable and ethical fashion, Kelly is the co-founder of organic sleepwear brand ALAS, co-founder of Australian ethical and sustainable fashion association Clean Cut, and co-founder of ethical online marketplace Well Made Clothes (as well as being our Issue 31 cover girl). With people and the planet as her focus, Kelly works tirelessly to get designers and consumers thinking about our clothing and design choices in order to create a brighter fashion future. We can’t wait to hear from this driven and inspiring individual!
