Fashion is Forever

From the fashions of Peru to the garments of Switzerland, there are more than a few common threads that link the wonderful world of clothing. The Liverpool City Library’s latest exhibition, United By Colour: Vintage Fashion From Around the World, investigates the element of colour. The 60 garments and accessories on display are vibrant, vivid and all part of the Darnell Collection, Australia’s largest private collection of vintage clothing. Around 23 different countries are represented, all with their own colourful histories to tell. We asked the curator of the Darnell Collection, Charlotte Smith, to tell us more about this exhibition and the beautiful clothes it includes. Keeping It In The Family

Some families are creative by nature. If your grandmother owned her own clothing store in 1940s Melbourne, there’s a good chance a love of sewing will be in your genes. Continuing a family legacy of craftsmanship, Lillian Marie & Me is a connection between grandmother and granddaughter. LM & Me match boutique materials with contemporary design to produce a range of handmade bags and bangles made from recycled materials. We love their delicate dresses which feature sheer fabrics, embroidery, vintage lace and detailing sourced from Lillian Marie’s old workroom. There’s no generation gap here, only the best of both worlds.

A Jolly Good Ride!

Fancy partaking in a tad of swelegant cycling among a crowd of casquette-clad riders? Dapper lads and elegant ladies dressed in their finest tweed will be coasting from Sydney’s Town Hall through the city streets to a secret location in Alexandria on Sunday July 31st for the 3rd Annual Sydney Tweed Cycle. Helmets are still a must, of course, so why not get crafty in advance and design your own vintage-inspired helmet cover? Picnicking post-ride is also highly encouraged – there’s even prizes for the best picnic blanket spread! Oh and did we mention the whole thing’s free? How very splendid indeed!

Two Golden Hours

I love the words pop-up shop, but I love them even more when they’re sandwiched in the same sentence as vintage caravan, handmade jewellery, artisans, antiques and, well, actual sandwiches. A working collaboration between sisters (and Peppermint faves) Perpetual One and old yarns, Two Golden Hours pop-up shop will be open from 10am-4pm this coming Sunday and Monday on the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland, brightening your weekend with a delightful array of hand-sourced vintage, reclaimed wares, handmade treats and yummy refreshments. Find out more here, or simply head along and join the fun at Yandina Station Homestead, 684 North Arm-Yandina Creek Road, Yandina Creek.

Silent Sundays

Exciting news on the fashion front! Our lovely cover girl from Issue 3, Rhiannon Leifheit of Liebemarlene Vintage, has been quietly collaborating with photographer Jamie Hopper to launch the new online women’s boutique Silent Sundays. A perfect mixture of handpicked vintage items and carefully curated and hard-to-find dresses from international designers (including Australian label Secret Squirrel – their first US stockist), the preloved lovelies are tracked down in the South and chosen to fit the theme of the season. The store’s dreamy styles are modelled by Tayla Collins Lowe, who has starred in a Jill Sander campaign, and have been photographed by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia. We suspect the silence on Sundays may be broken by the tap-tapping of an online shopping spree…

App App and Away

Although the hunt for secret, hidden shopping treasures is usually the best part, a few hints every now and then are always welcome. Enter Designer Lookout’s Boutique Finder, a new (free!) app for your smart phone. It uses your location to suggest boutiques or designers (including a bio for each and where they are stocked) in your area. You can even completely tailor the app to your preferences: indie, eco friendly, vintage or op shops. We like.

Garage Sale Trail

If your wardrobe’s overstuffed, your spare room imprisoned by boxes, and your car is now the only thing providing much needed storage space, then we think it’s time to get onboard for this weekend’s national Garage Sale Trail. (more…)

And The Winner Is…

While screen royalty Colin Firth may have stolen the show at the recent Oscars, his wife Livia has since stepped into the spotlight with her beautiful upcycled dress, created by Gary Harvey from 11 vintage/thrifted/charity shop dresses. (more…)

Skeleton Wardrobe

If you thought all the good vintage clothes in the world had run out by now (or at least been temporarily kidnapped by those dangerously hip kids like Alexa Chung and Daisy Lowe), rest assured you can still get your fix online at Bones Lie Vintage. Sleek, dark, edgy and sexy, this little Brissy boutique has definitely mastered a different aesthetic from the frills and florals of yesteryear we may be more used to. Plus they also have an extensive men’s section. Which means: no more Hawaiian shirts this summer! Even if you are going to the cricket.
