As a child, I fondly remember being taught to finish my peas and carrots. “While you just want to skip to the chocolate pudding,” my parents told me, “there are children in Africa who don’t get to eat all day.” But now, if we want to use the powers of eating for good, it seems the aim of the game is not to finish our plates. In fact, it’s not to start with a full plate at all. Halfsies, launching soon in Texas and New York City, partners with local restaurants to offer a very different dining experience. A special selection of menu items will undergo the Halfsies treatment – the customer still pays full price, but only receive a half portion of the original meal. 90% of the money saved on superfluous food production (did you know that around half of the food produced in the US is thrown away?) will be donated to hunger-busting and nutrition-improving initiatives globally, including feeding orphans at the Baby Watoto home for abandoned children in Uganda. Who knew half as much food could be twice as satisfying?

Sometimes your weekend just falls into place. Like when the lovely Hayley from Sticky Fingers Bakery, who you may have read about back in Issue 11, launches a new cupcake flavour range and invites you to come and sample them for free. It gets even better when you discover that things like ‘Choc-Chip’ and ‘Banana’ don’t exist in this world, and instead it’s Coffee & Doughnuts, Chocolate Cherry Cola and Raspberry Beret (as good as it sounds) – all made with local and organic ingredients. The new range will be available for all to try later this week, meanwhile there are still Hayley’s tasty, tasty classics to tide you over – as well as full-sized cakes, if you dare. A little birdy also told me that with Valentine’s Day coming up, Sticky Fingers will even do you a special, candy-hearted, loved-up half dozen, delivered to your sweetheart’s door for only $27 (*Melbourne only). We all knew Cupid had a sweet tooth.

Amanda Niehaus is the brains behind Easy Peasy Organic, a website devoted to sharing recipes, projects and ideas about sustainable living (for a true taste of her work, see the delicious smoothie recipe we’ve shared in the post below). Talking to Amanda about the evolution of her blog, her family and her personal ethos, we learnt that the road to Easy Peasy hasn’t been all that straight-forward… (more…)

Feeling that summer heat? A glass of icy goodness might be just what the doctor ordered! Smoothies are an old favourite but don’t have to be packed with fat, artificial colours and faux flavours (bubblegum flavoured milk? Eek). Smoothie recipes are easy to invent and adapt depending on what’s in season and what you have in the fridge. If you need a helping hand, there are some great websites out there with tips and tricks for creating healthy smoothies made from raw, organic and vitamin-rich ingredients. This recipe for Chocolate Avocado Smoothies comes courtesy of smoothie extraordinaire Amanda Niehaus, author of Easy Peasy Organic. As we say here at Peppermint, it would be unhealthy not to drink one of these. Promise us you’ll try the popsicles too!

Remember the days when you could wander down the road and borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbour? Or maybe you don’t! Now we’re more likely to “borrow” our neighbours’ wifi connections than baking goods or barbeques. If you want to get back in touch with your local community and the good old spirit of giving, Vege Mates is here to help with forums and threads dedicated to swapping knowledge (recipes, gardening tips), material items (vintage and antiques) and, if you’re close enough, even edible goods. Anybody with a garden full of homegrown veggies is a mate of mine!

Okay minties, it’s time we let you in on a little office secret of ours. If you ever wondered what keeps our brains firing away and fingers pumping the keyboards all day, we have to confess that it’s munching on our Harvest Boxes! These little parcels made from recycled cardboard are small enough to sit on your work desk and are conveniently delivered straight to your door. Every box comes with four individual packs, each containing a unique mix of fruit, nuts, seeds, crackers and sweet treats. You can even rate your favourite mixes online (which is something we do in our spare time, we swear). So good that you’d be nuts to pass them up…
