Copenhagen Fashion Summit

A Movement is Brewing: Guest post by Nerida Lennon

Last week more than a thousand key fashion stakeholders from around the globe descended on Copenhagen to join a movement to transition the fashion industry to sustainability. Copenhagen Fashion Summit is the world’s largest and most important conference on sustainable fashion and CSR. Like most things in Denmark, it embodied professionalism, style and sophistication. The conference was held in the spectacular Danish Opera House and participants were welcomed by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark wearing an H&M Conscious Collection dress. Key speakers were A-list quality, including supermodel Erin O’Connor, H&M, Gucci and the United Nations and European Commissioner for Climate Action. While these speakers were impressive, one presenter stood out most for his offbeat approach. (more…)

MBFWA: Akira

Akira presented a magical showcase on the last day of Fashion Week. And what a way to end a wonderful week! On show at the Box, models stood on low plinths surrounded by scattered lace and silk petals. A subtle soundtrack of twittering birds set a serene and ambient scene; a pleasant escape from the churning Fashion Week outside. (more…)

MBFWA: Roopa Pemmaraju

Many fashion designers have been inspired by Aboriginal art, however few have done it as strikingly as Roopa Pemmaraju. Her SS12/13 collection was a collaboration with Aboriginal artists from Coee Art Gallery, Desert Designs and Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. Each piece features original artwork from many of today’s incredible artists including Jimmy Pike, Judy Napangardi Watson and Shanna Napanangka Williams. (more…)

MBFWA: Ginger & Smart

After being to many a show at various fashion weeks, one can become somewhat tired of the same old sterile (yet sleek) locations. For their show at this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, however, Ginger & Smart cleverly chose the grandiose setting of Sydney’s old David Jones’ ballroom. The old-world charm of the building was contrasted with a large abstract wall art piece, designed by the Ginger & Smart duo themselves. Celebrating the label’s 10th anniversary, the mood was an upbeat and excited one. (more…)

Saviours of the Sea

Shockingly, there are only 55 Maui dolphins remaining off the waters of New Zealand’s North Island, and only a few hours left to sign a petition to help save this rarest of dolphin species from extinction. This is just one of a range of marine conservation projects supported by designer Miranda Brown and the Free the Sea T-shirt campaign, which will officially launch in May. A range of custom tees made from 100% organic, biodegradable materials will soon be available to purchase online with $5 from every sale going to Forest & Bird, Project Jonah and Enviroschools. Fight the good fight and help free the sea!

A Stitch In Time

While it’s the Edies, the Yves and the Escadas who will probably go down in fashion history, it’s an Enid – Enid Gilchrist to be exact – who in fact made one of the greatest contributions to Australian post-war style. When times were thrifty and there was nothing to do but to DIY, home sewers everywhere took inspiration from Enid’s designs when crafting clothes for their children. (more…)

Fabled and True

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what Fabled and True is made of. Sewn locally in Brisbane from recycled and vintage fabrics, designer Jaye Wolfe’s delicate new collection is the kind of guilt-free gorgeous that makes us all warm and fuzzy inside. Perfect for enjoying those last sunshiney moments of Autumn and backyard picnics with friends. Adore. (more…)

LMFF Wrap Up #2

It’s been a week of glamour, of inspiration, of sometimes overwhelming hedonism, but as the champagne bottles dry up and LMFF draws to a close, we are nothing but delighted with the increasingly sustainable direction in which the festival is heading. The LMFF Cultural Program kept us well titillated with its busy schedule of up-and-coming and sustainable designers, workshops, exhibitions and industry forums discussing the new, more conscious and intelligent consumer. Meanwhile, on the catwalks, Australian design creativity was in full force – with a range of ethically-aware and eco-minded designers holding their own amongst the big guns of the industry. (more…)
