Maybe she’s born with it? Sure, if her mother owned a pink plastic car and was married to a man named Ken. These days you can barely walk half a block without confronting hoards of overblown, airbrushed faces staring you down from billboards, newsstands and TV screens. Kim Kardashian has a new bikini body? No she doesn’t. Kim Kardashian has good lighting and a very savvy photo editor. At Peppermint, we couldn’t care less about keeping up with Kim and her clan of Kardashians. (more…)

As the summer heat dies down and that blissful Autumnal chill creeps into the air, what better time than to reach for your gardening gloves and get those green thumbs back into action. To help us all get motivated, Grow It Local has just launched a new, national kitchen-garden project focused on fostering backyard, balcony, community and windowsill food farming. Stop by the Grow It Local website or Facebook page for recipes, ideas and important tips on what and when to plant, how to maintain your garden and advice on keeping bugs at bay the natural way. Thirty lucky participants will also be chosen to attend a Local Growers’ Supper in Sydney, where they will have their own backyard produce whipped up by gourmet chefs. But hurry – you must register your patch by this Friday, March 23rd, to be in the running for one of these golden tickets!

The fashions we covet can often be unaffordable – but it doesn’t have to be this way. This week, Darlinghurst’s Oxford Street Design Store opened its doors: a new multi-purpose creative space dedicated to selling local artisan products below the $20 price point. Currently featuring limited edition fashion, accessories and prints from artists and groups such as The Hungry Workshop, The Grim Press, Page Thirty Three, Dubbleyou and Forgotten Fancies, the space will also be hosting various workshops and events for the public in the hope of generating new skills and increased interaction with creatives. Meanwhile, the curators are still seeking further local artists and designers to contribute wares to the store (as well as volunteers and interns to help out!), so get in touch if you’ve got the goods. OSDS is located at 58 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Lights, camera, action! The Byron Bay International Film Festival has rolled into town for ten days and is bringing with it a solid program of films on social and environmental issues, conscious thinking and positive living. The Byron Bay setting – picturesque beaches, bush and natural beauty – makes the perfect backdrop for the must-see program of flicks. Our picks of the bunch? Bimblebox, Manufacturing Stoke, Minds In The Water, The Hungry Tide, Miss South Pacific and Waste Not. Head along and catch the tide, March 2-11.

They say that three is the magic number. And when it comes to launching a successful creative business, these three things – creativity, investment and enterprise – certainly come in handy. This entrepreneurial tripartite is the focus of Creative3. Industry leaders from around the world in fields such as design, fashion, screen, new media and music will be converging on Brisbane for – you guessed it – three days of presentations, interactive panels, workshops and networking sessions. Taking place from the 26th to the 28th of October, each day is jam-packed with things to do, see and learn including a presentation from award winning graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister, Design and Happiness. Our money is on Day Two when the State Library of Queensland will host In Search of Sustainability, a panel session which explores the ways in which sustainability can be translated in business, policy and creative endeavours. Speakers include Alex Lotersztain, Caroline Hamilton, Vince Frost and Gretha Oost. Book your registration online and join us for some serious brainstorming.

Short and sweet – that’s how we like our films. Okay, maybe not all of them, but if they are the result of competitions like Light Up Earth then short films (5 to 7 mins to be exact) are alright by us!
So… if you have a burning desire to protect the earth (we do!), are creatively handy with a camera and want to win $6000, all the while helping us humans appreciate the precious resource that is Earth, then why not enter the greenest new film competition around? Just because it’s a serious subject, doesn’t mean the ‘treatment’ needs to be. Drama, comedy, horror, sci-fi, documentary, mockumentary, music video, animation and experimental are all fine, as long as the film focuses on Earth as the lifeblood of humanity – and the action we can take to save it. Jane Campion (director of The Piano) showed her support by saying “It is a very generous prize for short filmmakers and really a challenge to make good propaganda and stay honest.”
Visit Light Up Earth’s website for all the important bits like cost of entry, deadlines and other rules and regulations.
