It’s never much fun saying goodbye to an old friend. But these are happy tears, we swear! With the exciting news that Angela D’Alton, the founder of our favourite online design store Leeloo, is moving on to bigger and brighter things (a job at handmade haven Etsy!) comes the announcement that the website will be closing up shop at the end of this week. On behalf of everyone here at Peppermint, we want to give a HUGE thank you to Angela (and her lovely sidekick, Renee) for their ongoing support and wish them the best of luck in their new adventures. If you’d like to purchase a back issue of Peppermint from Leeloo (along with a multitude of unique designer goodies), best get your skates on! Check out here to snap up a back issue before Friday. Goodbye lovely Leeloo, and good luck!

Good news fabric fans (a.k.a. everyone – who doesn’t like fabric?), the fabulous Fabric Store are holding the summer edition of their much-anticipated biannual sale this weekend. Starting this Saturday January 21st and running until February 12th, all fabrics will be 30-50% off. With stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland, best plan your voyage now. Even if that means crossing the country. Or the Tasman Sea.

Who doesn’t love a good yarn with friends? It’s surely one of the great pleasures in life. So just think what a whole city square full of yarn and potential friends would be like. Fabulous, no? And then what if there were workshops with crafty people showing you how to knit and crochet that yarn into something spectacular? Too good to be true, you say? Well, if you’re in Melbourne on the weekend of January 21 and 22, you can head to City Square to see for yourself. The square will be yarn bombed (think trees covered in granny squares and other knitted and crocheted sweetness) on the 21st and experts will be on hand on the 22nd to talk about their yen for yarn and to demonstrate just how to whip something up out of wool. If you can’t make it that weekend, the tree-cosies will be up until the end of February. What a purl of an idea!

If you are like me and are getting a little tired (read: jealous) of our English and American friends boasting of their upcoming white Christmases, then it’s time to show them what we Aussies can do… Yep, there’s no heat or rain or humidity too great to stop us making all the Christmas wreaths out of newspaper we want! We found this delightful tutorial over at eco empire, a great sustainability blog from Perth, and are loving the festive reuse of something that would otherwise most likely be lining our recycling bins. Get the full instructions here, and personalise or embellish to your heart’s desire. (Oh and just because it says you can use old magazines for this project, please in no way consider this permission to start cutting up your old Peppermints!!)

Is it that time of year again already? The Finders Keepers Spring/Summer markets are on this Saturday and Sunday at Brisbane’s Old Museum. Plenty of old favourites and brand new designers will be trading their wares against a backdrop of live music, cold beer and sizzling sausages. Treat yourself to something handmade, vintage or crafty, and don’t forget to snap-up a few stocking fillers while you’re there. The silly season doesn’t have to mean silly purchases!

Imagine for a moment dropping all your responsibilities right now, walking outside into a sunny courtyard with a cup of green tea, some sort of muffin (I’m going to go with… blueberry?) and one of the most inspiring new books of the season. We’re talking about Olivier Dupon’s The New Artisans: a beautifully designed and divinely photographed celebration of the magic of handcrafting, profiling over 70 artisans who use craft techniques to create their own special brand of stylish whimsy… It’s our new bible. I want to live in its pages. And without the help of Can Do Books, a specialist Melbournian bookstore who have been supplying the best in craft, design, photography, gardening and DIY titles for over 20 years, we may not have even known about this book – and we certainly wouldn’t have THREE COPIES to give away to you lucky folk!

It’s going to be a fight to pry them from our grip, but if you’d like to win yourself a brand new copy (and trust us, you do) simply comment below and let us know what’s inspiring you the most at the moment. We know what our answer would be. (Hint: it’s this book). Entries close next Thursday, September 29 at 5pm – and while you’re waiting, make sure to check out Can Do Books’ website and Facebook page where you can find out about the store’s special craft programs and social meet ups. Who knows, your work might even end up in a book as lovely as this…

Spring is in the air – and with it, of course, Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Now in its 17th year, MSFW is about much more than just the catwalk, with events right across the city in celebration of design and creativity. The North Melbourne Market has long been a platform for independent designers with a focus on sustainable Australian-made fashion and design, and to celebrate their MSFW designer event on Sunday September 11, they have kindly offered a duo of accessories from East of Grey and Gaye Abandon to give away to one lucky Peppermint reader. Here at Peppermint we’re all for crafty goodness. So when there’s a whole festival devoted to it, we get just a little bit excited. Craft Victoria’s Craft Cubed festival launched at the start of the month, and already our heads are spinning from all the possibilities – with over 60 events, there’s a lot to see! Of course it’s not just about looking – several events let you try your hand at creating things, including workshops run by The Social Studio in their handpainted silk tent, set up for the festival in the atrium at Federation Square. Learn to dye, weave or drape fabric with their artisans, or bring your non-crafty friends along to the free artist performances by RISE (Refugees, Survivors and Detainees) on Saturday, August 20 from 7:30-9:30pm. For more information on what’s on in The Social Studio’s magical tent, visit the Craft Cubed website here – and don’t forget to check out the rest of the program while you’re there!

I love the words pop-up shop, but I love them even more when they’re sandwiched in the same sentence as vintage caravan, handmade jewellery, artisans, antiques and, well, actual sandwiches. A working collaboration between sisters (and Peppermint faves) Perpetual One and old yarns, Two Golden Hours pop-up shop will be open from 10am-4pm this coming Sunday and Monday on the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland, brightening your weekend with a delightful array of hand-sourced vintage, reclaimed wares, handmade treats and yummy refreshments. Find out more here, or simply head along and join the fun at Yandina Station Homestead, 684 North Arm-Yandina Creek Road, Yandina Creek.
