Spirited Style

That trusty fashion staple, the little black dress, is about to be transformed yet again by emerging Australian designers for next years ‘The Spirit of the Black Dress’ exhibition. The exhibition pays homage to the black frock and celebrates young designers, providing them the opportunity become part of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Applicants are assessed on their originality, silhouette and texture, and most importantly they must use sustainable thinking, production and materials! Ten winning designs will be chosen to feature at the festival. If you think you have what it takes, submissions are open until November 24.

The New Artisans

Imagine for a moment dropping all your responsibilities right now, walking outside into a sunny courtyard with a cup of green tea, some sort of muffin (I’m going to go with… blueberry?) and one of the most inspiring new books of the season. We’re talking about Olivier Dupon’s The New Artisans: a beautifully designed and divinely photographed celebration of the magic of handcrafting, profiling over 70 artisans who use craft techniques to create their own special brand of stylish whimsy… It’s our new bible. I want to live in its pages. And without the help of Can Do Books, a specialist Melbournian bookstore who have been supplying the best in craft, design, photography, gardening and DIY titles for over 20 years, we may not have even known about this book – and we certainly wouldn’t have THREE COPIES to give away to you lucky folk!

It’s going to be a fight to pry them from our grip, but if you’d like to win yourself a brand new copy (and trust us, you do) simply comment below and let us know what’s inspiring you the most at the moment. We know what our answer would be. (Hint: it’s this book). Entries close next Thursday, September 29 at 5pm – and while you’re waiting, make sure to check out Can Do Books’ website and Facebook page where you can find out about the store’s special craft programs and social meet ups. Who knows, your work might even end up in a book as lovely as this…

Realise Your Dream – Quickly!

Getting hooked up with leading UK creative contacts and a free return flight to do so feels somewhat dreamlike for a green creative down under. When you add the extra treat of $8000 spending money it becomes a fairy tale. However, you may not need to reach for a frog or a poison apple just yet… The British Council Realise Your Dream program has been nurturing Australia’s best emerging creatives with a professional development program for the last nine years. If you are in the first 10 years of your career and a citizen or permanent resident of Australia, you should hop to it and apply! But hurry – entries close this Monday, July 4.

Yours For Keeps

For most of us, treating ourselves to a nice morning takeaway from our local coffee shop has become a way of life. But what’s also become a way of life is the almost 3 million takeaway coffee cups we throw out in Australia every single day… Yeek! How many football fields would that fill? I’m not sure. Maths isn’t my forte. But what I do know is that you can help change this statistic by investing in a keeper! And to tie in with our current Mint Meter review of reusable coffee cups, we’ve got a bunch of these pretty pals to give away to four lucky readers. All you need to do is comment below telling us what you’re enjoying most about Issue 10. Competition closes in a week (that’s next Wednesday 29th June at noon!) so race out and grab yourself a coffee, I mean copy, now!

3things for The World & You!

If you believe that one individual changing one action can have an impact on the global good, then imagine what multiplying that action by three can do? Well, those clever people at Oxfam have done exactly that, and are this week kicking off their 3things campaign: encouraging a more ethical, sustainable and generous society by asking all of us to commit to three things that we can change in our lives for the better. These aren’t turn-your-world-upside-down kind of changes, but the results – collectively – just might be. So if you’re ready to nominate your own 3things, head to the 3things website and pledge now. As a little sweetener, Oxfam has also given us a tasty bounty of Oxfam Fair goodies to give away, including coffee and (possibly the world’s best) chocolate. All you need to do is pledge your 3things online and comment back here telling us what they are. Easy!

Fest La Frog

With a name that puzzles, intrigues and prompts immediate smiles, Fest La Frog could be a contender for either best-named festival or a weird cuisine. Playing out on April 9th 10.30am – 10pm on the Village Green at CERES Environment Park in Brunswick East, Melbourne, this festival combines music, food and art into a fun and completely sustainable experience. There’ll be organic veggies, solar-brewed beverages, sustainability workshops, solar-/wind-/bike-/bio-fuel-powered stages hosting an array of roots, funk, rock, blues, soul and hip-hop, including acts such as The Red Eyes, Rapskallion, Rosie Burgess Trio and more. You can reduce your CO2 even more by heading there by pushy or public transport. With eco credentials that go above and beyond, Kermit would be proud. Tickets cost just $20 (with a $2 discount for vegetarians!), however as luck would have it, Peppermint are giving away two free tickets plus some organic beer tokens! Comment below telling us why you want to go, and you’ll go into the draw to win tickets for you and a friend.
(P.S please note the change of venue from French Island).
